Trailing Truck  -  July 12th, 2022

While the boys in the machine shop were working on the drivers, I had the boys in the casting shop start working on the patterns for the trailing truck side frames.  As you can see the side frames are similar to the Big Boy, but the wheel base is much longer.  With a little cut and paste, the patterns were made, rubber molds made and the castings were cranked out.  The erection shop boys made what I call an "axle box" for the wheel sets and they were installed.  With a rolling box, the side frame casting were attached and reinforced to the box.  Next the boys added the brake cylinders, brake rigging, and lube lines among other foo foo.  The trailing truck rolls very well due to the ball bearing races on the axles, so it finds every incline on the track in the shop, and will roll away unless the boys chock it in place.  Oh the fun!  Well there you have a quick little project. The frames and motor block are next, so stay tuned for more fun to come!   -  Barry
