The boys in the casting shop made the molds and castings
for the tender sides and ends. The parts were sent to the erection bay
where the guys assembled them. An internal frame was built and attached
to the inside of the castings, to support the body on the wheel sets. A
removable plate was screwed to the frame with pedestals for the wheel
sets to attach to. All of the rest of the openings were closed up with
sheet material, permanently attached to the castings. Additional coal
boards were added to the top and the tender was placed on the track for
the first time! I know it is just a box right now, but there was a cheer
from the shop floor, when the crew was able to see it roll down the
track. Of course, the excitement is still in the air here at BLW, as
this is the largest locomotive project to ever come out of the shop.
