"After the
last update on the cab, I had the boys start fabricating the running
boards. I think there are about a million holes in those boards! To try
to keep things lined up and looking good, I made a drill timplet out of
brass and then bolted and clamped it to the board, so that all of the
holes could be drilled. After many hours of drilling, they about wore
out the drill motor!
Once
the running boards were finished, I directed the boys to work under the
cab to get the rear frame extension built. I still have not designed the
draw bar to the tender yet, but it will need to be done before testing
the engine on the railroad. With the rear frame in place, it was time to
move on to the firebox.
Intinse is the word of the day here! I have
never seen so many stay bolts and rivets on one forebox! With all those
in place, I directed the boys to build the ash pans and details on them.
After all that "fun", I decided to give the boys in the shop a break for
at least five minutes, before we move to the front of the boiler."
