Sn3 Symposium Clinic Synopsis

Steve Amitrano – Painting and Weathering Locomotives

      Wed 8:30PM, Fri 8:30AM

This clinic will cover painting and weathering brass locomotives using an airbrush and a wide variety of other weathering techniques.  Steve is a well known Sn3 custom painter and presents great information.

Barry Bogs – Making Urethane Castings

      Thurs 10AM and 7PM

Need a fleet of freight cars and there are no kits available?  Barry Bogs will show you how to make masters, RTV molds, castings, prepping and painting the castings, and methods for using them.  Barry models in G scale and has cast one piece high side gondolas!  A must see.

Al Boos – Drag Them Logs

      Sat 10AM

This clinic will look at photos of many types of prototype skidders, yarders, hoists and donkeys and models of the same.  Al will cover some kits and parts in metal, urethane, and wood available to model/kitbash these types of machines.  Techniques on coloring and aging/weathering will be included

Jimmy Booth – Weathering RTR Freight Cars

      Fri 7PM

See how the master of PBL foreground models weathers using a variety of materials and techniques.

Craig Brantley – Layout Design 101

      Thurs 10AM, Sat 8:30 AM

Planning your next layout?  You need a plan first!  Craig will show you how with considerations, tips and tricks for designing your railroad.  The information presented will be beneficial for novices to experienced builders.

Paul Cesak – Building Faultless Turnouts Utilizing Fast Track Jigs

      Sat 10AM

Fast Tracks Jigs make it easy to hand lay great looking, smooth running, single and dual-gauge switches, wyes and 3-way switches as well as straight and curved trackwork, using their close tolerance aluminum jigs. I have personally built and hand laid over 100 turnouts the old fashioned way and I will never go back. I'm not even sure when I last used a track gauge. Using the Fast Track fixtures, trackwork looks better and operates flawlessly. Come see just how easy it is as we build a Sn3 #6 turnout.  A drawing of the switch will be available at the end of the clinic.

Kenneth Ehlers – Digital Model Photography

      Wed 8:30PM, Friday 10AM

Ken Ehlers will discuss photo techniques and software used to produce publishable photos.  Ken has won numerous National Narrow Gauge Conventions model photography and model contests.

Jim Hinds / Steve Sandifer – LED’s For Model Railroads

      Friday 8:30AM and 7PM

Jim Hinds is an electronics engineer with experience in the design and electronics behind LEDs. "He is a consultant to numerous manufacturers and provides LEDs and LED circuits to the model community. Steve Sandifer  has been using Jim’s 603 LEDs for HO scale structure lighting, street lighting, and to illuminate various railway lanterns and marker lamps. They will demonstrate some ways to use LEDs in scale modeling.  You won’t believe what you are seeing!

Jim Lemmond – Building a DCC Layout from Scratch

      Wed 7PM

So you are going to plan a new railroad layout. What are the considerations necessary before you lay track and run the railroad?  This clinic will outline some basic considerations a builder might consider before construction.  The clinic will have lists of construction materials, tools, and electronic equipment with various sources of these items.  The Cedartap Railroad on the layout tour is a result of these considerations and methods.

Chuck Lind – How to Clutter up Your Layout

      Fri 8:30AM

Chuck will show you how to take your layout to the next level. The clinic will go over some of the common problems I have seen while visiting layouts and how to avoid or fix them.  Detailing your layout with more realistic mini scenes to lead the viewer into and around your layout

Chuck Lind / Tracy Mitchell – Southern Forest Heritage Museum at Long Leaf, La

      Thurs 7PM

Chuck and Tracy the two experts on Long Leaf will show the day to day operations including RR operations of what it was like in a Southern sawmill complex.  They will then go briefly into what the museum offers including the only fully operational belt driven machine shop in the south.  If you are interested in logging this is a must see clinic.

Everett Lueck – The Locomotives of Longleaf

      Thurs 8:30PM

The Crowell Lumber companies operated out of Longleaf, LA from 1894 to 1954.  During that time span, the Crowell companies operated 3 lumber mills, numerous logging camps, 3 lumber railroads and a common carrier railroad, the Red River and Gulf Railroad that tied everything together.  The story of how everything went together and how the companies tailored their logging and railroad operations to the reality of the timber acreage that they were able to acquire is a fascinating story of a family owned industrial complex of the early 20th century and how it operated in the overall world of North American railroading.

John & Mike McKenzie – Tree \Making 101; A Closer Look at the Bottle Brush Tree

      Thurs 8:30AM, Fri 10AM

We take the group through a Power Point Presentation of our slant on bottle brush tree building and demo our tree making machine, making a conifer tree in the clinic.

Tracy Mitchell Tools of the Trade

      Wed 7PM

Tracy is one of the area’s most prolific and talented modelers, but in this clinic he will show you - not how to construct and detail models - but what tools he uses to achieve his success. The emphasis will be on the proper tool for the proper job.  After seeing this clinic, you too will be able to build that car or structure with the same reckless abandon.

Tracy Mitchell – SPNG Slide Show

       Sat 8:30AM

Tracy will present a slide presentation of one of the neatest and often one of the most often overlooked narrow gauge RR’s, The Slim Princess Southern Pacific Narrow Gauge.

Loren Neufeld Scenery 101 and 102

      Friday 8:30PM

The clinic includes demonstration of several techniques of rock casting and other methods of creating vertical scenery, as well as fast and easy ways to use sand and other natural materials for any type of terrain. Concepts of good scenery design will also be discussed.

Jim Vail – Building Stuff; Trestles, Structures, and Scenes

      Thurs 8:30AM and 8:30PM

Scratch and kit building and bashing in all materials – wood, styrene, molded plastic, card stock, paper, etc. and integration into scenes.
